Lasius niger, the black garden ant and the classic choice for a first formicarium. The species is very hardy and forgives swings in temperature and humidity, which makes it ideal for beginners. The queen founds the colony on her own and needs no food for the first month. In winter hibernation at 5-10 °C is mandatory, otherwise the queen wears out quickly.
