Messor structor, the steppe harvester ant and one of the best species to begin with. Workers come in different sizes: large majors crush grains with powerful jaws and turn them into "ant bread" for the larvae. In the wild it stores seeds in underground granaries, so keep the arena dry and feed a mix of seeds and small insects. In winter the colony needs a rest period, which helps the queen live longer.
